Almuñécar Aquarium

aquarium-almunecarThe Almuñécar Aquarium can be found underground at the Plaza de Kuwait, 300 metres from the Town Hall and Majuelo Park in Almuñécar, Granada. There are between 2500 – 3000 fish in total, ranging across more than 200 different species.

The aquarium exhibits are set across two floors, with the first floor taking you through the evolution of the most primitive forms of marine life, from the humble jellyfish to the more complex seahorse. The second level demonstrates the importance of flora and fauna within the marine ecosystem.

The exhibits occupy over 2 million litres of water distributed across 20 tanks. The best is saved to last with a walk through a 17 metre long tunnel, allowing the visitor to see bull sharks and sea eagles lazily swimming overhead.

Work on the aquarium in Almuñécar originally commenced in 2005, with completion expected by December 2006. However, numerous unforseen problems occurred during the  construction and, despite an inauguration ceremony being held in March 2007, the aquarium didn't actually open to the public until Friday 18th July 2008. It was definitely worth the wait though, with the aquarium providing a wonderful insight into the marine life of the Costa Tropical.
