Costa Tropical Beaches
The beaches of Andalucia, Southern Spain and in particular those of The Costa Tropical, in the Province of Granada, are typically a series of promontories and hidden coves, some of which are extremely hard to find, thus making is easier to escape the crowds.
The climate in the Costa Tropical is superb; along this exceptionally beautiful and picturesque coastline a combination of the mild breeze from the north of Africa and the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea, coupled with the freshness provided by the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, results in a unique sub tropical microclimate. Enjoying more than 320 days of sunshine each year and an average temperature of 20°C, the appeal of The Costa Tropical de Granada is not hard to understand.
With is its dramatic shoreline, remote coves and stress-free beaches it is the ideal location to bask in the bright Andalucían sunshine or go for a refreshing swim in the marine blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
The Costa Tropical coastline runs from La Rábita in the east to La Herradura in the west. Each town along the coast has its own beach attracting thousands of both Spanish and foreign visitors. However, due to tight restrictions on building, this area does not suffer the problems affecting other regions. Whether you prefer the less inhabited beaches of La Rábita, Gualchos, Calahonda, Carchuna or Torrenueva to the more populated areas of Motril, Salobreña and Almuñécar, there is something to suit everybody. For the committed naturist, or merely those who are daring enough to disrobe fully, one should head towards the beaches of La Joya in Motril or Cantarrijan on the outskirts of Almuñécar.
A number of the beaches in the Costal Tropical de Granada are regularly awarded the ‘Blue Flag’, the programme that works towards sustainable development at beaches/marinas through strict criteria dealing with water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, safety and other services. Up to date information regarding the Blue Flag scheme, along with a list of those beaches currently awarded Blue Flag status can be found here.
