Gas Supply In Spain
There are not many mains gas supplies in Spain, these are usually only found in major cities. If you are fortunate to have a mains gas supply, you will need to contact the company to arrange to have the gas switched on, the meter read and to sign a supply contract. As with electricity, the bill is produced every month and can be paid in the same way, with a direct debit through a Spanish bank account being the easiest option.
For the majority of people though, bottled gas is used and costs less than half that of mains gas. The bottles are delivered to homes by Repsol Butano, for which a contract is required; this will only be drawn up after a safety inspection has been made of the property where the gas appliances are to be used. Under the contract these appliances will be serviced and inspected every five years.
Using a gas bottle is straight forward, and can last a family of four up to 4-6 weeks, depending on usage. The downside is that that they are heavy and tend to run out at the most inconvenient times, so forward planning is essential.
