Paperwork
Spain, like most countries, has its fair share of documentation requirements. In fact Spain just loves bureaucracy. From applying for an NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) to obtaining Residency in Spain, there are numerous documents that need to be completed, often in triplicate.
Here we offer advice and guidance on the procedures and requirements for the completion of the most commonly required forms and paperwork for citizens of the European Union.

NIE Application Form
Up until recently British citizens buying a property in Spain were able to do so before obtaining an NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero or Foreigner's Identity Number). However, Spanish law now dictates that all foreigners buying a property in Spain obtain an NIE prior to completion of their purchase.
Applying For Your NIE
Completing the application form for your N.I.E (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is quite straightforward. Follow our guide on how to complete the application form simply and quickly.
Residency in Spain
Regulations state that EU citizens who plan to reside in Spain for more than three months must register at their local Foreigners' Office (Oficina de Extranjeros) or at a designated National Police Station whereupon they will be issued with a Certificate of Residency in Spain.
Empadronamiento
Empadronamiento, or the Padron Municipal is a record of all local residents within a municipality. It is held at the town hall and is the Spanish equivalent of the electoral roll. If you own a property in Spain, regardless of whether you live in it or not, you should register since the local town hall is allocated funds from central government, the amount being dependent on the number of residents. If you wish your children to attend the local school you must register on the Padron.
Vehicle Documentation
Buying or selling a car in Spain involves significant paperwork. There are many things to check before embarking on the purchase of a secondhand car in Spain, and the transfer of ownership can be quite complicated for non-Spanish speakers.
