State Education

The Spanish Education System and state schools have undergone dramatic change over the last decade with standards now on a par with those in the rest of Europe. In Spain state education is free and is compulsory from age 6. Catchment areas do exist, although they do not appear to be as stringent as one might expect.

Text Books

Whilst State Education in Spain is free, historically parents have been required to buy text books each year costing on average €120 per child per school year. In recent years, though, this has been changing. The Junta de Andalucía has, for some time, been moving towards providing free text books for all children up to the age of 16 within the State Education System.

International Schools

Many parents, particularly those with teenage children opt to send them to an International School rather than a state funded local Spanish school. Although down to personal choice, it is generally accepted that the younger a child is, the easier it is for them to adapt to the Spanish Education System.
