Granada May Lose Low Cost Airlines

Vueling and Ryanair, the two low-cost airlines which currently operate out of Granada Airport, could be in danger of pulling out, after the alleged decision by Granada City Hall to terminate an agreement which provides a 15% subsidy towards their operating costs; 5% is contributed by Chamber of Commerce.

The President of the Diputación Provincial Government, Antonio Martínez Caler, confirmed there is an outstanding sum from the 2007 subsidy still due from the City Hall of approximately €190,000. Should this not be paid the airlines may well decide to terminate routes into and out of Federico García Lorca Airport in Granada.

Following on from Monarch's decision withdrawal from Granada in November 2007, this move could prove disastrous to property owners in the Province of Granada, who rely on the flights both to the UK and other parts of Spain. There is also likely to be a significant impact for the province's tourist industry, a fact which Granada City Hall would do well to consider.
