Almuñécar Aquarium

Almunecar-AquariumIt has been announced that the long awaited opening of the aquarium in Almuñécar is finally set to happen on Friday 18th July 2008.

Work on the aquarium originally commenced in 2005, with completion expected by December 2006. However problems occurred during the laying of the foundations, which delayed completion of the work until March 2007. Seemingly having overcome the problems, the inauguration ceremony went ahead in March 2007, with the mayor of Almuñécar proudly presenting the aquarium to several hundred invited guests. Somewhat bizarrely, this was despite the fish not having arrived. Instead divers swam through the various tanks and tunnels to entertain the guests at the ceremony.

Aquarium-AlmunecarThe fish were originally introduced to the tanks in May 2007. Unfortunately, during the testing period further problems were revealed, resulting in the aquarium not being open for the summer of 2007.

Because of the requirement to rectify the outstanding faults, thus allowing the contractors to be paid and the project to be signed off completely, the opening was delayed yet again, until Easter 2008. That date, too, came and went, but now an announcement has been made stating that the aquarium will definitely open on Friday 18th July. There are between 2500 – 3000 fish in total, ranging across more than 200 different species. They occupy over 2 million litres of water distributed across 18 tanks.

The Almuñécar Aquarium can be found underground at the Plaza de Kuwait, 300 metres from the Town Hall and Majuelo Park in Almuñécar, Granada.
