Personal Safety

The region of Andalucía is considered to have a low crime rate, particularly in respect of violent crime. You are more likely to be a victim of petty theft, such as bag snatching or pick pocketing; this can become a problem in the summer, when the number of unsuspecting tourists increases in the busier resorts.

As people relax in the sunshine they are often lulled into a false sense of security, whereas by taking simple precautions, the like of which we are all familiar with, the likelihood of becoming a victim can be greatly reduced.

Carry as few valuables as necessary and carry them out of sight. Never leave your personal belongings unattended and be wary of people who get unnecessarily close to you at airports, at stations, on trains or buses or even on the street. Since many petty thieves work in gangs, it is advisable to be extra cautious if you are approached and asked something for no apparent reason. This is a popular ploy of distraction.

If you have a hire car, take particular care in placing any valuables out of sight and again be wary of being approached by seemingly well intentioned people pointing out a faulty light or possible puncture. There have been cases reported where hire cars are targeted leaving the airport as thieves are aware that cash and passports are being carried. Thankfully these instances are rare.

If however, you are the victim of a crime it should be reported to the Local Police as opposed to either the Guardia Civil or National Police. They will take your contact details in the event they locate any stolen items, complete a statement, which you be asked to sign and provide you with a copy. It is extremely important that you do not lose this document if you are planning to claim on your insurance. If your passport has been lost or stolen, the consulate in Málaga will be able to assist you in arranging a replacement.
