12^th October is National Day in Spain and is a public holiday throughout the country. The main event of the day is a massive and vibrant military procession through the centre of  Madrid, attended by members of the Spanish royal family, government officials, along with representatives from Spain's military institutions, public services and prominent businesses. The Spanish Air Force organises a fly past whilst drawing the National Flag with their vapour trail.

12th October is also the anniversary of the date that Christopher Columbus, after leaving Spain, arrived in the New World in 1492.
